”Stroke play is a better test of golf, but match play is a better test of character.” – Joe Carr
Our prediction of a heavy weight finale came true as the home team Sweden will play Italy for the gold medal tomorrow. The two finalist finished 1-2 after stroke play on Wednesday. The Swedes made short work of their German opponents, winning the pre-storm morning event 2-0 (3/2 & 4/2). After the long delay, the two teams went back out and the Swedes put the hammer down winning the afternoon singles when Adam Ström sank a birdie putt on hole 15 to end the match. Final score was 5½ – 1½.
The Swedes will play the Italians, who won a hard fought, day long battle over England. Like two heavyweights in the ring, the teams split the morning foursome event. In the post-storm singles the slugfest went down to the last light of the day. Amazingly, the evening stayed away as long as possible, and with the curtain of darkness falling, Italy, with a tremendous approach shot by Flippo Campigli that left his ball inside a meter on the final hole, Patrick Kelly of England conceded after missing his par putt.
